you should be doing this with as little fuel as possible. Like 20-30 miles of driving with the light on. There is a how to on the srtforums.
As some of you know my car has been running lean at wot for some time now and I am finally getting around to figuring out and hopefully fixing the problem. The first thing I am changing is the FPR/fuel filter.
It is supposed to be a very quick and simple swap. I was just wondering if anyone has any tips or anything i should know before doing so?
From reading on the forums.... just remove the fuel line, push in the fpr and spin it so the slots line up then remove and replace....? Is this all there is? Anything I am missing that i must know?
questions:
-should i unhook the battery before hand?
-is there any tool or trick to getting the pins on the fuel line pushed in to slide if off the fpr?
-do i have to relieve the fuel pressure before removing the fpr entirely?
sorry for stupid questions but I want to do things the right way before F'n anything up. I'm somewhat handy but sometimes lack confidence in myself to accomplish things without error.
Anyway, thanks in advance for any assistance.

i can't really remember, but i don't think you have to drop the tank for the FPR, but to replace the fuel filter, you do. in order to relieve the pressure in the system, remove the fuel pump relay and crank the car a few times.

Swapped FPR/filter yesterday. Piece of cake. No need to run the car to empty or anything. (I had about a quarter of a tank)
Disconnected the batter. Fuel line came right off as did the ground (im guessing thats what the other wire is). To get the fpr off you must push down the tab on top (this took me and my neighbor a few minutes to figure out, but other than that it was 123) and spin it until the groves lined up. Then just pull it out. INstalling new one is cake.
Unfortunately, it didnt solve my issue. I took the car for a test ride....floored it in 2nd at a little over 3k rpms: turbo begain to spool and felt like the car was gonna go but AFR shot way up to 15-16 and the car hesitated like all hell and backfired. Boost read around 13psi and should be set around 18psi.
I am going to call email Scott at FM tonight or call him tomorrow. I think I am just going to drop my car off there.
On a side note....the car does seem to start quicker and idle a little leaner now that i switched the fuel filter/fpr.

think i would hear it? or perhaps it would smoke or something? everything sounds normal?
I am thinking maybe a defective fuel pump or a tuning issue but am up for any ideas that i could check before driving an hour and a half to drop my car off.
hmmm.. haven't seen the full list of symptoms or your setup for that matter.. here's what i would check
is the fuel pressure (at the rail) dropping off -- probably can get a a cheap gauge at harbor freight (fwiw.. make sure you have an extinguisher just in case)
IF the pressure at the rail is dropping, you'll need to check the voltage at the pump (actual the connector) -- some people report 4volt drop, then you'll need to do a rewire (or my preference is to run a thicker gauge wire in parallel with the stock one since the stock relay is 30a). IF the voltage is >10v sounds like the pump isn't pushing enough, time for a 255lph and a new sock.
an exhaust leak would be noisy, and prevent building boost --- shouldn't lead to a lean condition
i'll be rewiring the pump next Saturday morning, if you need a second set of eyes stop by.
thanks for the input...

agp wga
aem wideband
aem boost gauge
custom dsp tune done by Matt at Tune Time in Toms River
thats all i can think of that could affect anything.
Symptoms:
Car runs totally fine under normal driving, but if I WOT it hesitates, afr shoots way up, car just sounds like its starving for fuel....thats only under wot...been driving like this for months (i granny drive 24/7).
time for basics:
1-what codes are you throwing? (advancedauto will pull them for free)
i had a similar WOT issue, turned out to be a bad plug/wire (carbon trace down the inside of the boot) -- guessing weaker spark prevented ignition under boost
also had the insulator blow off (http://www.srtforums.com/forums/f169...ailure-567230/)
2-boost leak test
3-back off boost, set wga to stock boost 15lbs
4-return to stock tune & recheck codes
1) not throwing any codes
-plugs and wires have barely been on the car for a year...car was fine for months after they were put on.
-coil pack is stock
-car has 50,000 miles on it....90% highway
2) no present boost leaks
3) Adjusting boost back to stock level... will do this the next time i have free...my only question is how do i know how much boost the wga is set to with out being able to wot?
4) i dont have any codes thrown... i have contemplated throwing stock tune back on but I am tuning device illiterate and dont wanna fuck anything up worse than it is. lol
Thanks a lot for your help...any input is truely appreciated.
you need to get a gauge on the fuel pressure, if you think that's the cause -- fuel pumps go bad occasionally
i expected codes.. hmmm..
wires/plugs are a VERY common source of wot issues..
have u pulled your plugs and inspected them recently ? could try old wires too --- just to rule them out..
double check your gap is .028-030, not .052 (stock)
and you MUST run super , not 87/91 -- that will not work in this heat

i would data log the car using the diablo then post it on here to have somoene look at it what it seems like is the diablo tune you got there doesnt seem to be tuned right since i heard some bad things about tune time down in toms river. then what i would do is take the diablo tune out of the car. drive the car do a wot pull and go from there. because if you say the car feels like it is straving for fuel and you didnt have a problem before the tune id go with takin that tune out of the car and maybe puttin back in the stock 93 tune that comes preloaded or go back to the stock tune and go from there

the 93 octane tune on the DSP leans out our cars.. try playing around with the WOT fuel settings a small % at a time... i had to increase mine almost 15% which is normal.. if you have to go above 20% there may be something wrong. also try doing a Fuel Pump Rewire also... it gives .5 to 1 point of AF at idle... helped with my AF's at idle bere rewire i was at 16.2 after o was at 15.8.... but then found out i had no gasket between the o2 housing and mani.. now im at 14.8-15.2 at idle... at WOT im still at a nice 11.5-11.8
o..... i never knew that... why is this???
I thought you had this fixed?
Did you ever check Fuel Pressure?
Sorry I haven't posted in a few days...been really busy with work! Posting on my Droid gets annoying!
Mario....haven't fixed it. I had plans to drop my car off at FM in March and they cancelled on me BC a car in their lot (I forget who's bit he's on here) was broken into. Since I had school and two jobs and just getting around to fixing now. Been granny driving for months!
Going to try changing the tune back to stock tomorrow but I'm a noob and am afraid to do anything with my DSL myself!
Question on installing the stock tune back onto the car with the DSP....
The manual says to unhook any kind of electrical devices that could affect the voltage of the car.....do I HAVE to do this to install the stock tune? the only devices i would have to unhook are the gauges (which i have never done), and in all honesty I dont know how to do.
I was also wondering....When i click on performance tune there is 3 selections to choose from
1) Perf93oct
2) Modify Stock tune
3) restore original
Tune time did (or were supposed to have done) a custom tune. Where would their custom tune be under? modify stock tune? i would have imagined that there would be another one to select ---custom tune or something?
Again, I am a dumb ass when it comes to the DSP...

just pull the gauges out of the pod and unplug them

Steve can i do it without pulling the gauge pod out??
you might be able to. it depends how tight the wires and gauges are tucked in there.
