i had the same problem 2 weeks ago -- i used the advanced auto rebuild kit, $5.
basicly the piston gets rusty so it needs to be removed and cleaned up before installing the kit.
if your paying for labor, replace the caliper
As the title states my caliper siezed on me while on the Van Wyck yesterday. Luckily for me I was not far from home so I managed stop by the mechanic before heading home. As a result I also hit a pothole so instead of tire rolling over it it slammed into it thus I now have to replace tire also. Now my dilemna is that the mechanic would rather just replace with remanufactured caliper instead of piston kit from dealer. Is there anyone that would do the piston kit option here in Queens (not looking to dirve far with car in this condition)?

Well I opted to have the mechanic replace the caliper. On the downside...the tire hit a bump and now the sidewall has been compromised so now I need to replace the tire...adn unfortunately there is a nationwide back order on the Kumhos ESTCA ASX (according to TIRERACK). Hopefully I will find a vendor that has one.
What is "compromised" Do you have a bubble, a gash, a hole, or a good tire, and they are busting your balls?
after i had 2 bubbles with the 205/50/17, i upgraded 245/45/16's much happier- more sidewall no bubbles..
plus the tires are cheaper
how do you get more sidewall with a lower profile tire??
^^^ if this was facebook, i would like your comment.

width went from 205 to 245, hence more sidewall (notice the rim diameter decreased from 17" to 16") for the same overall diameter
