View Full Version : Motegi TrakLite 17x8's
Like the title says, I'm looking at the Motegi TrakLite 17x8 wheels. They have a +45 offset which I suspect means I'll need to run a spacer?
Anyone have them in this size? Any comments on them?
I'm thinking coilovers will be a must (I have another thread about that up already.)

i run traklite 17x7's and have a +45 offset and there's tons of room, no spacer needed. on that deep a rim though you probably will need a co set up. great choice in rim btw :)
Yea I figured you chime in Amy. I remembered you had the 17x7 for daily duty and 15x7 for track abuse.
Did you get yours mail order or what. I'd love to find a shop locally that has these in stock so we could try a test fitment to see what issues their would be.

17x8 will not fit with a 45mm offset. You will need a 35mm offset, 38 at the HIGHEST with the slight possibility of having to use spacers. Remember, your also on stock suspension.

What if I go to coilovers. I'm already planning on them over the winter (hopefully??? :( )

if you go coilovers, you might be able to fit them.

eh, gonna be a tough tough fit w/out spacers. Worth a try but I doubt it w/ that high of an offset.

so just get the 17x7's and you'll be good :D
think 17x7 would be wide enough?
I'm not the kind who likes to change wheels like I change socks so I want to do this ONCE and be done.
I'm just remembering when I got wheels for the Shadow and went from 14x5.5 to 15x7. DRAMATIC improvement in handling.

i've been running 17x7's since about two months after i got the car. i use a 225 series tire, but larger can fit. you can go as high as 245's w/co's and the right tire/rim combo.
what's your concern as to being wide enough? as in, wide enough for what?
I want the best compromise between traction and handling possible. The higher for both the better.

traction is always an issue, but i found that on the stock turbo the 225's were sufficent. if you're gonna go big turbo, a 235/245 might be better, but i've been fine with a 225. as far as handling goes, you'll have to ask howard on that one. i do know though that he runs 215 and 225 series tires and does well on them.....

I use 235's on my wheels (18x7.5). It's a night and day difference coming from 17x7 wrapped in 215's. I have however driven in other car's with 225's with 7" wide wheels and they were pretty good. It really helps when you have a good tire.

Then get the best summer tires you can for the money. Not all seasons, and no bargain hunting...it's an all out budget just short of R compounds. That will get you a noticeable improvement alone in handling/traction and braking all at once.
Tire width - nice consideration for contact patch, however if you keep going wider-you need a larger wheel to support the width. Wheel size/mass/price/offset becomes the factor.
I like 225 since it's a modest/common size. Ideally I'd be complete with a 7.5 x 17 inch wheel that weighs 8 lbs each with no spacers - but I haven't found it yet that I could afford.
No problem with summer only tires, since I don't ever drive the car in the snow... or even the rain! :D
This car is my "toy" car. It's the one I drive when I want to drive with "spirit" so i'm willing to spend the extra $ to be happy.
Sounds like I should consider the 17x7 version and go with a 225 or 235 sized tire.
Oh and regarding Amy's comment about stock turbo... while I am still currently hampered by that aspect :D my ultimate goal is a near 400/400 car based off of a Stage 3 turbo setup.

you drove it you know what she's like :)
All right... let's move this thread on a bit...
So if I go with 17x7's what tire choices do I have that'll fit my needs. Ultra high performance dry weather streetable tires that'll grip the road like my cat does on my shoulder when we walk into the vet, and will allow fantastic turning abilities.

Some of my favorite street/track tires include: Eagle Goodyear F1 GS-D3, Bridgestone Potenza S03 Pole Positions, Potenza RE730, Michelin Pilot Sport
All seasons: Bridgestone RE950, Kumho HP4 716
New products I would try-anything Extreme/Max summer performance tire rating from Tirerack.com
Competition tires (I have not tried these personally, but have been passenger in the car on a track): Kumho VictoRacer V700, Toyo Proxes RA-1, Hoosiers A6/R6, Michelin Pilot Sport Cup

Falken Azenis nt-615
There was a time I hated them, now that I own em I love em.

looks are secondary... performance is more important. this goes for tires and for women. :D

If you want to HEAR the Potenza S03s perform, go into vids section and click my videos. Just watch the speedometer to get an idea.
I love them, they are predictable and so are the Michelins.
Ask hozay or nyydynasty how they stop as well.

Sota - I would go with an 8" wide wheel if you could. I've used 17x7 and 17x8 wheels which were basically the same weight with the same set of Toyo T1-S in 225/45. There was a noticable difference in turns. The same set of tires on the 7" felt much more spongey than the 8" wheel. Also with the 8" wheel you'll have no problems going to a 245/40 tire. Just another opinion to confuse you more.
Hozay - How are those Falken Azenis RT-615's in the rain? I like them, but need a good wet/dry tire like the Toyo T1-S or Goodyear GS-D3. You need another Winter setup?
H - Still tearin up the track in those SO3's?

i've used nittos in the past and they're awesome tires, i would definetly pick up another set. these new ones weren't out when i got my eagles or i definetly would have considered them.

Tom, there are still awesome. I got two days on them at Watkins Glen in May. They basically stayed on the car during the summer. And I did plan on two more days in OCT with them, but I may not be able to go now. So if I don't-they will wait until spring.

I was very concerned & worried about driving with them in the rain so I avoided it for about 2 weeks. Then I had no choice but go to work in a downpour. Suprisingly enough they worked out great! I wouldn't go so far as to comparing them to the GS-D3's but they had no problem driving through puddles & driving on the GSP at highway speeds in the rain. On a dry road? Fantastic. My only draw back would these tires follow the road religiously. If the road has a curve, the tires will try to follow it.
Yah, i'm definitely gonna need another winter set up. See if I find someone with stocker's laying around since I sold mine like an idiot. Then slap a set of either Dunlop SP wintersports or Blizzacks. Whatever I can get my hands on. Let me know if you run across anything worth while. I know your the king of finding wheel deals.
