I got my car in January, middle of my senior year in HS. Just don't be wreckless, any car can go fast enough do something stupid. Is it a good car? Find someone on these forums to say otherwise.. IT FAWKING ROCKS! :D Besides that, its a great community to join.

If this is a first time car then no. Bad on gas, not a safe chassis, too tempting to floor it each time you drive.

Fun, YES but not necessarily a good car.

IMO

no, its not my first car, its going to be my 3rd. my first car was a 99 mountaineer, then it got taken away for bad grades, now i drive a 99 zx2 escort. its not very fast tho lol.

price of insurance...
the temptation 2 race/drive fast..
lack of experience,to handle a car like that,kids tend 2 get in2 accidents,thats why i tend 2 get used stuff,get it down then go 4 a newkie

Heard 04 was better, but its whatever you can find at that point...You do know that the SRT is discontinued, right??? Not that i'm telling u to go out right now, but June is a long way away.

It all depends on you. Are you a idiot when you drive? Do you drink alot? I had a high performance car when i was in highschool, somtimes I wonder how I survived it. Since its not your first car,I think you will be fine. And the fact that you are even thinking about it being a good car for a young driver tells me you have your head on strait.

Oscar :D
10-23-05, 09:52 PM
thanks, and i never drink when i drive. ive asked my friends to come ppick me up from a party when im drinking, because i wont drink and drive. my mom respects me for that, and she trusts me more.

huh? isnt that what they call an ....... oxymoron??

no, this car is DEFINITELY not for a 17 y/o. Thats my .02.
I cant add much to what everyone already said, here. What they say is true and I dont need to repeat it.

Stick with your escort for a few more years. Scratch and bang up that car, before you buy an srt.

Oscar Im assuming you are gonna get mixed ideas from the different age groups.. NO from the older guys and yes from the younger guys obviously.. Take this into consideration b4 you buy it..

1. Can you drive stick well?

2. How is your job..secure and well paying? Expect to be paying upwards of 3-4 grand a year for insurance on it depending if you are going to have full coverage or not.. full coverage is rec. since you are a new driver.. so id say 4000 grand a year minimum.. + car payments if you are going to have them

3. What type of person are you? (seriously now) Are you the wreckless type that sometimes likes to show off..im not saying you are but its common in kids.. if so this car is VERY FAST and CRUSHES easy!.. Its terrible in the snow.. not very good in the rain

Now on the + side

1. The car is great, I love it with all my heart..I wouldnt give it up for anything.. Fast/Reliable/looks decent cant ask for much more

2. Gas isnt THAT BAD.. keep it stock and you are getting good mileage.. S1 and S2 get shitty mileage but I know of 50 trim SRTs and Stage 3 turbo SRTs making over 400whp getting 25 mpg (low boost obviously)

3. Buying it new or from a certified dealer will give you some sort of warranty on a HIGH PERFORMANCE vehicle as long as it stays stock.. which is awsome

It all depends on the person bud, My 1st car ever was a Dodge Dakota R/T 5.9L pick up truck with a Vortech Supercharger pushing 10lbs of boost + bolt ons.. it was most likely just under 400whp and just under 500wtq.. yes that was my 1st car EVER... And im fine.. never got into 1 problem/accident *knocks on wood*.. when i bought my SRT it was like a BIG ASS downgrade, its still slower than my truck but MUCH more reliable

If you know you can easily meet the 1st 3 requirements I posted up and you can be a responsibly safe driver on the streets.. and when its time for you to race just take her to the track, then my answer is YES BUY IT!!!

p.s. Please take my word for it.. im only 19 and i know what im talking about cuz im going throught it... you sound like me 2 years ago lol ;) Good luck and be safe

oh man, now u got me thinking. i dont want to pay more than 25k for a car. and srt is like that fastest for 22k in usa. thats what i herd.

AND YES IT IS THE FASTEST FACTORY CAR FOR UNDER 22K.. if you wanna go ACR then it will come out to like 23grand .. regular SRT you can prolly buy for 20k.. maybe even find an 04 with like 2k miles on it for like 17-18.. i bought my 03 for 14.5

It doesn't rain/snow in Cali.

2. Gas isnt THAT BAD.. keep it stock and you are getting good mileage.. S1 and S2 get shitty mileage but I know of 50 trim SRTs and Stage 3 turbo SRTs making over 400whp getting 25 mpg (low boost obviously)

Gas is horrible...You'll get about 215 to the tank (on premium) if you never boost and do alot of highway driving)

3. Buying it new or from a certified dealer will give you some sort of warranty on a HIGH PERFORMANCE vehicle as long as it stays stock.. which is awsome

You will not stay stock with this car

don't you remember how many srt's were being totalled?? most of them were between the ages of 18-22.

Oscar, bottom line is that its still up to you, but i wouldnt NOT suggest to get this car right away. Even in the snow, its not safe.

If you do decide to buy a srt-4. Buy a new one. The intrest rates are higher with used vehicles. Alot of people think they are saving money when buying a used srt for 18,000 with a higher intrest rate. If they bought the new srt at 20,000 with a lower intrest rate they would have saved money or paid slightly more for a new srt-4 that was not used just for hole shots and burnouts.

Now then. Your 17, first of all lets look at the money side of the equation.

Payments will be anywhere between 300-400$ a month.
Gas lmfao your first three months will be really bad. Should avgerage bout 50$ a week.

Tires will run you 150 a shot so keep that in mind if your gonna be spinning them.

Synthetic oil is reccomended thats gonna cost you 30 bucks a shot if you do it yourself. 3000= 30$ = not bad :p

SO lets say you get lucky and get about 330/month payments.
330- payments
50-80 - gas (depending on how you drive.)

Your looking at over 400 bucks a month just to drive the bitch. If you got over 700 a month to play with then you should be ok.

I feel like its a maturity issue with this car. Do you do your own laundry? Is your room clean? Do you find yourself speeding in your car now??

Dont get me wrong im a poster boy for fucking up with my bad tranny and accident. But in the same sense ive surpassed the 140 mark more times than i can count on my hands and toes, and still park it every night.

This car will scare you if you dont respect it.

I think you should make this decsion on your own, nobody can tell you how your gonna do with the car. You have to make a self assement and then go from there. Look at it from all points of view like you are now, weigh the opinions of others very lightly tho.. you know yourself best.

Id be honest with myself and ask these two questions:

1. Do I need/want a high performance vehicle. It costs $ to be fast.
2. Am I ready to take on a car payment, and make a "bad" investment. Cars are depreciating objects you will never get your money back from a new car.

If you can/ your uncle can, try to find a used one that had an older owner.

I can promise you that if a young kid is selling the car it was beat to piss. (MY car is a perfect example of this. Warranties rule!)

You have to really ask yourself those questions and be honest with yourself, lying to yourself is very very bad and habits can be formed quickly b/c of it.

IMOHO:
Buy it if you have the finances to support yourself/ signifigant others as well as the car. You wont be dissapointed, nor will you regret it. The car is all you could ever wish for and more. People knock it for turning radius/ ride. Its obviously not that bad b/c they still drive it :D
GOOD LUCK!

Story behind me

I drove a Lexus SC300 for probably around 9 months before my sister totaled it. I usually drove around 5 mph over the speed limit, nothing much. I only raced once (I think it was a N/A M5 300ZX, heh, I won too) and I occasionally did a few sprints down open roads. After it was totaled I eventually got a used 04 SRT-4. I still didnt really speed, keeping it to around 5 over, I did do a few more sprints down the road though, but usually would stop at the end of 2nd or 3rd gear. I only raced a few times in it, always making sure though there was no traffic near by. So, I did do some illegal things, but I always tried to be as safe as I could about it. One day coming home from school I was doing a quick sprint down a nice 4 lane, divided road. Its fairly straight, with two slight curves in it. I was still WOT after the first one, and I shut off and started breaking before I entered the second one curve. As I started going around the second one I lost control, the car oversteered, and my car went sideways into the median, then flipped over. I was fine, all I got was a scratch on my head, and a feeling of wow, I just fucked up bad. The car was totaled, roof caved in on my side, and pretty much everything else exterior-wise was dented, collapsed in, smashed, missing, etc..

i've been driving since i was 14 but never owned my own car.. i got my license like 2 years ago (i'll be 26 in feb).. this car was my first car and most powerfull.. i basically learned how to drive stick with it (drove my cousins transam for an hour 5 years ago). this car will probably make you want to go fast.. i did 1000 miles in the first week and went wot maybe like every 3 minutes.. i've had some lil bumps here and there from my own mistakes.. only one shows.. the big hit i got was when it was parked.. since i've only had my license for about a year when i got the car. my insurence was crazy.. 2600 the 1st 6 months.. and i saved a Grand since i changed addresses.. just be carefull and remember people have their kids in the cars driving next to you.. you should be fine

Just go buy a mid 90's honda civic. Insurance, car price and Gas mileage is better. There is no reason to buy a brandnew car when your that young. Get a beater and when you get older and can afford to keep up with the cost move up.
