View Full Version : "drag" tires on stock wheels question...

Ok... I know that the truly safest size on our 17x6 OEM wheels is 205/50 for general driving, but if I wanted to setup a pair of GMR-like for drag-use-only, how wide and tall tire could I get away with? I'm thinking of hitting up the local Sears tire center and seeing if I can't get them to "donate" tires for my growing drag habit. Could some insane widths be shoehorned onto our narrow 6" wheels and used just for straight line fooling around? Obviously I'd need to keep my speed way down when turning around, but that shouldn't be a problem.

If not the 17x6, what about the ACR BBS wheels, or some other super cheap wheel that I would be able to find a highly common sized tire to put on them.

I'm trying to do this on the uber-cheap... namely FREE. :D
I got a spare set of wheels still, and if I can get Sears to give up right-sized tires for free..... :yay:

215 on the stock 6" rim is pushing it, i would not go higher than that. i would really suggest a set of steelies and dr's if you want tires to play with, it's worth it in the long run. going cheap ends up hurtting you....

Sota, I know free is a good word - but what you're trying to do to support your drag habit is counter intuitive.

-6 inch shoe horn attempt is a compromise on potential tire width
-not to mention you will be looking around for really weird/uncommon tire sizes (w/varing prices)
-the mass of the stock wheels are greater than the Kosei/steelie alternative
-the weights of 17" tires ares generally heavier than a 15 inch--(but this comparison may be close if you choose a wide 15")

With all the above factors, you want to drag race and anticipate lower times? This I gotta see with my own eyes.

you can use a stock wheel with a motorcycle slick.i dont remember the tire size offhand but the big tire bikes use 17 inch wheels.i believe it is a 8x17

sorry pal.. thats impossible, tho i have seen a video of ET Street radials stuffed on a stock rim.. but idk where you think you'd find those for free?

your best bet is to just get steelies and buy a used pair of slicks.. maybe GMR will be selling the 23"s soon pretty cheap :D
